This article reports on a case study of a technique aimed to increase the pragmatic competence of adult learners of English as a foreign or second language. In this study students are exposed to real audiences in authentic settings. The results show that students learned the subtle effect cultural and social factors can have on a speech event in a way that is difficult to recreate in a classroom setting.Downloads
