Abstract

Refugees who have St. John's, Newfoundland, as their first place of residence in Canada often have inadequate or no English language skills. Several programmes are available to speed their transition into Canadian society. To a certain extent the programmes overlap, but each is also distinct and serves different specified needs of the refugee community. This paper examines the strengths and weaknesses of each programme.
